George's

George's in Subi is about to change hands. I know this because I nipped in with the sis for dinner last night and they told us as much. The squid was gone, which was a shame, but we made do with own-made olive bread served with olive oil for dipping, a little bowl of skordalia which was basically yer mashed spud with roasted garlic and some olive oil, and very nice it was, too, although I missed an extra squirt of lemon. We also shared a big fat Greek salad, with lots of good olives, nicely treated tomato and seeded cucumber and not too much lettuce (or 'let-wiss' as my mum used to say) (along with 'hallycon days'), topped with some good fetta and dried herbs. A rustic goat braise presented as one lump of butter tender flesh surrounded by braised vegetables and some nicely crisp chopped spuds. A glass of the house Greek wine was surprisingly good. The spicey honey biscuit was so so, and I didnt love the galaktobureko - a vanilla slice topped and bottomed with filo. Biggest problem was the addition of some commercial maple syrup to the plate. Loved the bread, loved the goat, loved the salad, loved the wine. The bill: $90 for two, and free coffees because we had to remind them.
